I’ve been a coach for over 10 years, helping people overcome stress and anxiety. Because I’ve heard so many of your stories, I know that stress and anxiety can manifest in one of 3 ways: you’re either hiding, you gave up or you’re sorta trying to get better.
Let me explain.
Here are the “Hiders”: you’re in denial that you have stress and anxiety and you certainly don’t speak about it. You might have a great career or even a public facing role and you can’t afford anyone to know that you don’t have your stuff together. So… you just go on ignoring it. You’re in survivor mode, pushing through to seem happy around your friends. But underneath the public mask, under the surface, under the hard shell that you spent years curating… you feel extremely vulnerable inside. And lonely. Because you don’t have any problems, you don’t open up to anyone about how you feel, you feel lonely and isolated. Even though you seem to have the BEST, most social life, from the outside. You can’t sleep at night, have trouble falling sleep, trouble staying asleep, wake up tired, or all of the above. You’re embarrassed that you even feel this way, for someone as successful as you are, you SHOULDN’T have this problem. In more extreme cases, you have a hard time identifying that you have such high levels of stress and anxiety, like the fish can’t tell there is water around them, it’s your “norm”. In other extreme cases, you have chronic pain in your body so severe, that you may consider taking medical leave, or it’s hard for you to work.
Here are the “I’ve tried everything”ers: you know you have stress and anxiety. So much so, that for YEARS or DECADES all the methods you’ve been trying have only dug a bigger hole under your feet. You feel that the stress and anxiety may come down at times, overall, you’re still struggling. You may even say “well, I AM better” but deep down, you know you’re only moving the hot potato from the left side of the plate, to the right side of the plate. You’re still feeling like you’re on your last leg, you can’t go on another day, you’re at the end of your rope. The problems that you’re feeling are so big, that if you were to admit the depths of the suffering to yourself, you would completely fall apart. You swing between being apathetic, resigned or flat our despondent. There is a sort of silent “giving up”, because you feel that you’ve (seemingly) done it all, and tried it all. Your stress and anxiety on a scale of 1-10 is a 25, by your own account. Because you’ve been bombarded with so many opinions over the years, it’s hard to trust yourself. In some cases, you have had narcissistic relationships, perhaps a parent, a primary care giver or a significant other. So you may have numbed out the extent to which this is a huge problem and the energy drain has been happening for perhaps your entire life.
IF - huge IF - you try to get out of those two situations, you end up in a place that SEEM different, but it’s actually very similar. You want to take some action, but you can’t. You feel paralyzed by the daunting task of finding a solution. You THINK you want to find a solution, but you don’t actually do anything about it. So you slip back to being a “Hider” or a “I’ve tried everything”er. So now you feel stuck because while you don’t want to be where you’ve been, you don’t actually go the whole distance of getting rid of the problem entirely. And round and round we go. I call this place “The Ditch”. You’re exhausted just thinking about it, and you, very sadly… give up… again.
